Minor semifinals go to deciding games

BBL_MC_logo_horRIGA — Both of the BBL minor league semifinals are set for exciting games this week to cap off their best-of-three series.

As predicted Ventspils were strong at home in their first leg against VEF Riga, blowing out in the final quarter on Wednesday evening to wrap the game up 75-66.

The score did not truly reflect just how tight the game really was, with Ventspils only holding a slender 3-point lead going into the final. But again, like they have on more than one occasion in the past year, the Ventspils roster showed maturity beyond its years to ease away from VEF Riga when it mattered.

Down in Šiauliai, things were not going to plan for the Lithuanians, with Estonian opponents, Rock dominating all facets of the game to produce a [private_supervisor]shock 84-61 victory.

This was a game Rock were never meant to win, and certainly not supposed to win by over 20 points. The 3,100 crowd were silenced as Rock began the game with a 10-3 run, a lead which would stretch out by as much of 10 before the end of the quarter.

Šiauliai were solid throughout the middle two quarters, without actually making any inroads on pulling the game back. They further imploded in the final quarter, seeing their guests cruise to victory. Rock’s starting five were particularly impressive, with four of the five finishing the evening with 14 points.

Just like it had been predicted that Ventspils would win at home, so too was it predicted that VEF Riga would be just as tougher nut to crack on their home-court. However, it did not always look this way with VEF having to fight back from an 8-point deficit going into the final before finally prevailing by one point, 72-71.

Ventspils looked the better of the two teams for most of the game, but the sudden death nature of the game stirred VEF Riga into life in the final as their bench began to fire, proving the difference between the two teams. The deciding game will take place in Ventspils on Wednesday.

On Saturday evening, Šiauliai proved that Wednesday evening’s defeat had been nothing more than a slight glitch in their armor, winning the return leg with ease 69-62. The deciding game will take place in Šiauliai on Tuesday. [/private_supervisor] [private_subscription 1 month]shock 84-61 victory.
