Teen starlet making name for herself

The teenage starlet opening for Nouvelle Vague in Vilnius last year.

VILNIUS — Migloko’s debut album heralds the entry into the music scene of one of Lithuania’s most promising new artists.

Her self-titled debut album, released this week, demonstrates the 17-year-old’s abilities across a number of disciplines. She has a surprisingly raspy voice which makes her sounds much more mature, and she wrote many of the songs and plays multiple instruments.

She also sings in three different languages — Lithuanian, English and French — sometimes mixing them in the same song.

Even though she’s still a minor she’s landed a gig with high-profile alternative band Nouvelle Vague when they performed in Vilnius in 2009, which makes sense given her similar approach musically.

Her style of music across the 17-track album varies significantly from jazz to acoustic pop to bossanova. Many of the tracks are reminiscent of Katie Melua or Norah Jones, vocally.

Though some of the songs don’t really click stylistically, Migloko and her band have tried to do a lot in this album and when it works it’s remarkably original, like on “Muzikinis Telefonas” with its chicken-clucking chorus.

The budding star is likely to play some live gigs in support of the new album, and her live show is certainly entertaining as she sits perched behind a large painting frame, enveloped in stage fog will her band strums away.

Her album retails for a reasonable 17 litai (€4.93) and is available from Muzikos Bomba stores in Lithuania or from supermarkets and petrol stations. It can also be ordered online — check out her Facebook page.

Another reason why you’ll NEVER find me at the šudoskylė called “CoffeeInn.”

I remember when bands in New York could buy a night at CBGB’s or on Sunset Strip… good to know about the “galimybės” available locally in Vilnius… I’ll pick up Ableton Live or Cubase and become a star tomorrow…. if you’ll cover me in the press…
