€141 mln for Citadele

RIGA — Citadele, the fiscally-healthy offshoot bank of Parex, had its capital increased by 99 million lats (€141 million) to make a total of 101 million lats.

Citadele was created to be the stable part of Parex Bank, which was nationalized in 2008. The new bank will be responsible for lending to consumers and holding their cash.

On Wednesday, the budget commission in Parliament approved the increase in capital. The government is trying to make a stable arm to the bank that it had to nationalize before it collapsed.

Support for Parex bank is approaching its limit. Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis set a limit of 1.3 billion lats for public aid. The figure is now at 1.1 billion lats.
