Radēviča wins Latvia’s 1st gold

BARCELONA, Spain — Ineta Radēviča became Latvia’s first European Athletic Championships female gold medal winner after leaping 6.92 m in the long jump competition on Wednesday.

Radēviča, who competed in the 2004 Summer Olympics, won a NCAA triple jump championship for the Nebraska Cornhuskers and is a former Playboy model gave the best jump of her career in Barcelona. The jump is also a record high for Latvian athletes.

Portugal’s Naide Gomes also reached 6.92 m with her jump but came in second overall after all the rounds were tabulated. Russia’s Olga Kucherenko, who was predicted to win, ended up settling for bronze with a 6.84 m leap. Defending champion Lyudmila Kolchanova, also of Russia, came in fifth.
