Disgraced judge sacked over negligence

KAUNAS, Lithuania — President Dalia Grybauskaitė sacked a judge this week after it was found that she acted in breach of the law including fraudulently seizing high-value real estate.

Disgraced former Kaunas City District Court Judge Daiva Mekšraitienė had the decree signed against her sacking her from the position after an investigation against her found she had acted with negligence and breached the law.

Due to the legal immunity extended to judges, she cannot be prosecuted, the president’s press service reported.

Grybauskaitė said the court needed to conduct its activities and strengthen its authority. The move will galvanize public trust in courts in Lithuania, rather than frustrating them, the president said. Not one judge can act irresponsibly, the president said, because it tarnishes the entire judicial system, the president said.

Mekšraitienė is the second disgraced judge to be sacked by the president so far this year. In June, former Šiauliai District Court Judge Vilija Pilitauskienė was booted from her position for acting with negligence in her cases.
