Gulbis chokes in Canada

TORONTO — Ernests Gulbis tried his best but failed to perform any better in Canada than his disappointing result at the Farmers Classic in Los Angeles, this time going down 6-4, 4-6, 4-6 to Robin Söderling in the second round of the Rogers Cup.

Gulbis took the opening set, but after two hours he succumbed to the Swede after over-hitting the baseline a number of times. The match was server-heavy, with neither performing particularly well on their returns.

“Ernests played very well today. He was serving huge and hitting the ball well. It was really tough for me to really get into the match. It took quite some time, but at the end of the second set and third set I think I played much better,” Söderling told ATP after the match.

We’ll have to wait until the W&S Financial Group Masters in Cincinnati next week to see “The Gull” in action again.
