TALLINN — Finnish electricity transmission system operator Fingrid invests €320 million into the construction of the second electricity transmission cable EstLink2 between Estonia and Finland.
The 650-megawatt cable will be built in cooperation with the Estonian transmission system operator Elering and a €100 million investment from the European Union. Fingrid says the new cable is a direct result of the liberalization of the Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian electricity markets.
The new transmission cable will be built in addition to the present 350-megawatt direct connection raising the total electricity transmission capacity between the countries to 1,000 megawatts. The electricity operators hope that the new line will start working in early 2014.
Fingrid and Elering have been drawing up preliminary plans for the new submarine cable for about three years. EstLink 2, that has been planned by Fingrid and Elering for three years, is one of the foremost reinforcements in the electricity transmission grid in the Baltic Sea region.
