NEW YORK — There are no remaining Baltic players left in the the competition as the U.S. Open begins to move into its quarter-final stages after they were knocked out in the second round.
After making it past the first round of a grand-slam for the first time, Latvian Anastasija Sevastova proved little match for her second-round opponent, women’s 6th seed Svetlana Kuzentsova going down 4-6, 2-6.
Matching her much more fancied opponent in most facets of the game, the telling factor was in winners hit, with the Latvian managing just six winners compared to the Russian’s 27.
Three Baltic women were in action in the women’s doubles, with Latvia’s Liga Dekmeijere pairing up with American Julie Ditty, whilst Estonian Maret Ani teamed up with compatriot Kaia Kanepi.
Dekmeijere and Ditty were successful first up defeating Alicia Molik and Meghann Shaughnessy 7-6, 6-1. However, their run was halted in the second-round going down 2-6, 2-6 to 12th seeds Vania King and Monica Nicalescu.
The Estonian pair didn’t fare better, failing to make it past the first round, losing out 1-6, 1-6 to 6th seeds Anna-Lena Groenfeld and Patty Schnyder.
In the mixed-doubles, just one Baltic player, Kaia Kanepi featured. Pairing up with Slovak Machal Mertinek, the pair lost their first set 3-6 against Flavia Panetta and Dusan Vemic, before coming back to take the second 6-4. However Panetta and Vemic proved too strong taking the third 2-10, ending Baltic hopes at this year’s Open.
