Estonian footballers outmatched by Spain

MÉRIDA, Spain — Estonia could not stop the classy Spanish from winning 3-0 Sept. 9.

Estonia were hoping to replicate some of the form they had shown just over a month ago when they had competed strongly with Brazil in Tallinn but in the sweltering Mediterranean heat, the Estonians could not replicate similar form.

Holding the Spanish out for the first 30 minutes, their defense wilted when Spanish superstar Cesc Fàbregas netted the first goal for the Spanish. In the second-half, the Estonians managed to hold tight, trying to employ a similar physical game to that worked well against the Brazilians. This lead to three yellow cards, all against Estonia.

The constant pressure placed upon them by Spaniards finally told when Santi Cazorla netted his team’s second after 82 minutes. The final blow came in injury time when replacement Juan Manuel Mata scored his first goal for his country two minutes into extra time.

Estonia are now second to last place in their group. Their next game will be at home against second-placed Bosnia-Herzegovina on Oct. 10.
