Color is coming to Vilnius

VILNIUS — Vilnius’ fall color is one of its most unappreciated attributes.

You don’t see it hyped in the tourist guides. I suppose that’s because by mid-September, it’s already pitch-black shortly after 8 p.m. and below zero degrees some nights.

Its an indicator that the long, gray Baltic winter is just around the corner. Regardless, throughout September and October the day weather is pleasant enough for strolls around the city.

During those walks you can appreciate just how many trees the city has. In fact, over two-thirds of the land in the city is green space that turns majestically orange, yellow, brown and red in autumn. Enjoy it before the trees exfoliate and go bare.

Here’s a list of the best places to see multi-colored leaves in all their glory:

1. Vingio Park — the largest park in the city boasts numerous forested footpaths perfect for seeing the autumnal hues and clearing your mind. Just watch out for the bicycles that zoom past occasionally.

2. Belmontas — if you can get a ride out with a local, the Belmontas agglomeration of restaurants, bars and historic wooden mills on Vilnius’ far southeast side are atmospheric and enjoyable. There is also a great walking path through the forest — you will forget you’re in a city.

3. Sereikiškių Park — walk behind the Vilnius Castle and you’ll find this little park full of trees between the Vilnia River and the Hill of Three Crosses. If you walk up the heavily-wooded hill, there’s a great view of the entire town at the summit.

4. Neris River — a walk along the Neris anywhere in the city will show off the fall color very nicely. The grass embankments are hardly an example of fine groundskeeping, but you’ll also see many trees and city landmarks.

5. Antakalnis — in addition to the city’s most beautiful church, the Baroque St. Peter and St. Paul’s, the neighborhood on Vilnius’ northeast side features the Valakampiai beaches, scenic bridges and a historic cemetery full of trees.
