RIGA — Latvian tennis player Anastasija Sevastova has continued her meteoric rise through womens’ tennis rankings, coming in at 83rd on the latest WTA women’s singles rankings.
The promotion comes on the back of some strong recent performances, notably making the second round of the U.S. Open earlier this month and a quarter-final appearance in last week’s Guangzhou Open in China. What was most remarkable about the second feat was her upset victory over number one seed Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues in the round of 16 (3-6, 6-3, 6-1).
The performance gained significant international media attention for the previously unheralded 19-year-old, who will now be looking on to make the world top 50.
Following on from last week’s performance in China, Sevastova has started this week strongly, advancing to the second-round of the Hansol Korea Open after beating Frenchwoman Mathilde Johannsen in the first round 6-2, 7-5. She will now meet Russian seventh seed Vera Dushevina in the second-round match.
This form has been in stark contrast to that of her compatriot Ernests Gulbis, with the latest ATP tour men’s ranking seeing the Latvian drop out of the world top 100.
