Baltic football leagues round-up Sept 29-Oct 6

Meistriliiga (Estonia)

A busy week for league leaders Levadia saw them play potentially below their best standard as the three games in the week seemed to take its toll. The week started well enough for Levadia with a 3-1 away win over Kalju before a below-par performance saw them take 84 minutes to dispose of cellar dwellers Tallinna Kalev on Saturday. The week then finished for them with a 1-1 home draw to third placed Trans. Trans would have been content with the draw to go with their 2-1 away win over Flora on Saturday. It was a mixed week for Flora, who had earlier managed a 1-0 win over Tulevik on Tuesday. Tulevik then came back strong on the weekend, overcoming Kalju 3-2. It was an action packed first few minutes with Kalju up 2-1 after just six minutes. Sillamäe Kalev kept their slim chances of winning the league alive with a 3-0 home win over Maag Tammeka. In the only other game of the week Kurressaare had a strong 4-1 home win over Paide.

LMT Virslīga (Latvia)

It was a controversial week for the Virslīga as revelations of teams betting on their own games rocked the league. The week ended in the disqualification of Dinaburg who also saw themselves kicked out of the Triobet Baltic League. The controversial team was also absent from any action over the past week. Blazma and Tranzits started the week rolling with a one all draw on Wednesday night. In the other Wednesday game Olimps kept fifth placed Jūrmala in check recording a 2-0 home victory over their closest rivals. Moving into the weekend’s action Daugava Riga remained cemented at the bottom of the table following a 4-0 loss to Blazma. Jurmala suffered further heartbreak, going down for the second time in the course of the week, this time 1-4 at home to Liepāja’s Metalurgs, who briefly stand alone atop the A-lyga, after second and third placed Ventspils and Skonto fought out a 0-0 deadlock.

A-Lyga (Lithuania)

Ekranas and Vėtra showed that there is little between the two top-placed teams in the A-Lyga when they played out a close fought 1-1 tie on Wednesday. The draw saw Vėtra remain one point clear at the top of the table, something that did not change following Sunday with both teams recording home wins; Vetra 5-1 over Šiauliai and Ekranas 1-0 over Taurus. In other action LKKA were unable to record a home win over Banga, going down 2-1, whilst Kruoja were also to experience defeat at home, going down 1-0 to Sūduva.
