VILNIUS — The primary suspect in the killings of a judge and woman in Kaunas on Monday, Drąsius Kedys, is still on the run two days after an intensive police search began.
Tuesday evening an international search warrant was issued for Kedys’ arrest in connection with the double murder. Police are continuing to investigate if anyone else was responsible for the killings of District Court Judge Jonas Furmanavičius and Violeta Naruševičienė, 29 of Kaunas.
One of Kedys’ possible motives is revenge for the alleged lack of action by prosecutors over the sexual assault of his daughter. Kedys claimed Laima Stankūnaitė, his 4-year-old daughter’s mother was prostituting the girl to Furmanavičius, Andrius Ūsas and another man referred to only as Aidas. On Wednesday the Seimas Committee on Legal Affairs has started an official inquiry into the state’s handling of Kedys and his accusations that his daughter was sexually assaulted.
The story has grabbed the nation’s attention, with the latest details emerging on the headlines of all of Lithuania’s major news publications. Kedys accusations about the criminal justice system’s inability to prosecute the sexual assault of his daughter has struck a chord with some Lithuanians cynical about the country’s troubled courts. A Facebook fan page for Kedys has been created, and as of Wednesday evening had over 1,200 members. A translation of the group’s motto is “There comes a time when the law must be taken in your own hands.”
Anyone who either sees or knows anything about the location of Kedys is asked to either call 112 or visit the nearest police station. Police are advising not to try to apprehend the suspect as he is likely armed. Kedys is 37 years old, 180 to 182 cm tall, has an athletic physique and a cropped haircut.
