TREVISO, Italy — Ventspils failed to earn a place in this season’s Euroleague after they went down 88-76 to Benetton who advance courtesy of a healthier aggregate following the home and away format.
Having defeated Benetton at home earlier in the week, the question was always going to be whether or not they had beaten them by a large enough margin, due to the structure of the competition which saw the team with the best home and away aggregate advancing. Unfortunately for Ventspils was no as the young guns were outplayed 88-76.
Following his freakish performance in game one, American import Aaron Pettway was a marked man in game two, albeit still managing 13 points and eight rebounds.
While he was a heavily guarded man, the rest of the Ventspils starting five stepped up offensively, all ending the night in double figures, but unfortunately couldn’t offer the same prowess when it came to rebounding.
Ventspils real archilles heal though, proved to be its bench which managed to add just five points to their team total.
Ventspils was tough opposition for most of the game, but like in game one the young team’s inexperience shone through in the final quarter as the game.
The all important superior aggregate began to slip away from them as Benetton pulled away to a 12 point winning margin, seeing them advance by 17 points.
Ventspils will now turn their attentions to attempting to win the Baltic Basketball League where they are yet to play a game.
