Estonia, Lithuania produce respectable results

TALLINN — Although neither Estonia nor Lithuania were able to produce a win this Saturday, both put in respectable performances in their latest World Cup qualifying matches. Both teams are already mathematically eliminated from continuing on.

Last time Estonia faced Bosnia-Herzegovina they were thoroughly dealt too in a somewhat one-sided affair. However, this time round playing at home Estonia was able to put up much more of a fight, going down 2-0 after conceding a goal in each half. Bosnia-Herzegovina all but guaranteed themselves second-spot in the pool with the performance.

Estonia will be hoping for a large crowd when their campaign comes to an end against Belgium mid-week.

After dropping a number of players following their embarrassing loss to Faroe Islands, Lithuania looked much more composed this time out against Austria. Down 1-0 at half-time, a goal to Marius “Stanky” Stankevičius tied the game up with a well-timed shot in the 66th minute. However, Lithuania were guilty of committing fouls at the wrong time, giving Austria the opportunity to convert from the penalty spot in the 80th minute. It was an opportunity that Austria were not going to let slide, converting the winning goal.

Lithuania also have the opportunity to finish at home and will be looking to finish the campaign on a high note with victory over the already qualified Serbia.
