Advancing gets complicated for Latvia

RIGA — Wednesday night Latvia will have to enter full-out attack mode against Moldova if they are to have any chance of qualifying for South Africa 2010.

Following their heartbreaking loss to Greece on Saturday evening, coupled with Israel’s comprehensive victory over Moldova, Latvia have temporarily been shuffled back to fourth in Group 2. With this in mind, Latvia will not only have to win but have other games go in their favor if they are to regain second spot in the group.

The other games taking place in Group 2 tomorrow see the all but qualified Switzerland take on Israel whilst Greece prepare to take on Luxembourg. The outcomes of these games will be vital to Latvia‘s chances of qualifying. Luxembourg need to produce a miracle to upset Greece whilst Switzerland beating Israel is also no sure bet but certainly likelier.

The last time Latvia met Moldova was August last year when Latvia managed a 2-1 victory playing in Moldova’s backyard. Latvia will be looking to utilize the home town advantage and dominate the game from the outset. If this is accomplished they will then put their fate in the hands of Switzerland and Luxembourg and keep their dreams of World Cup glory alive.
