TALLINN — Three sisters in Estonia had their decade-long rape ordeal with their father put to an end after he was caught in March. Prosecutors say investigations into the serial sexual abuse are soon to be concluded.

The existence of the case was released by the Estonian prosecutor general’s office for the first time Wednesday. However, many details about the case, including the names of those involved and the location of the family’s residence, are being kept secret because of child protection laws.

The 10-year sexual abuse allegedly perpetrated by sisters’ father was discovered by police after one of his daughters ran away from home and was brought to police.

The father allegedly abused his daughters, who are now 22, 17 and 15, on a daily basis, in what has been described as a “seemingly regular home.”

The prosecutor general’s office told Baltic Reports that the mother had denied any knowledge of the abuse.

“She confirms being not aware of the rapes. Anyway, there is no proof of her awareness or participation,” Carol Merzin, the prosecutor’s press adviser said.

Merzin said the verdict would be handed down in November.

So far, Estonia has evaded worldwide coverage of the case, the likes of which damaged the reputations of other countries that experienced similar cases.

Austria was inundated with negative headlines after Josef Fritzl was discovered in April last year to have concealed his children in his basement while raping them. He began abusing his children in 1977.

Another case was discovered in Australia this year where a 60-year-old man was found to have raped his daughter for a period of 30 years and fathered four of her children.
