Tallinn’s first speakeasy

TALLINN — Tallinn is so short of live music venues it’s almost a crime. So I went to Chicago 1933, and for live blues it stands head and shoulders above the rest.

I was so sick of hearing about the place from friends, I thought I’d pop down and find out what all the fuss is about this weekend.

It’s refreshing to find a place that does not have young ladies with over-sized handbags peppered around the room. It’s just a simple concept, great music, with plenty of atmosphere and reasonable prices to boot.

It’s very open plan but still you feel a sense of intimacy. It attracts all types, there are tourists, local Russians and Estonians, young and old, couples having a romantic evening, groups of girls on a hassle-free night out, it’s all there.

Any negatives? Well, the charming staff can’t keep up and it’s hard to find a seat, but apart from that, it’s as good a night out as you’ll get in Tallinn and no stupid entry charges either.

Take note competition, there’s money to be made in just provide a relaxed night out!

Get there early if you can, order by the bottle to avoid dehydration and test the menu. It’s varied, tasty and a decent value.

Tell me what you think!
