Estonian, Lithuanian campaigns end on high note

TALLINN — Estonia and Lithuania ended their failed World Cup qualifying bids on high notes on Wednesday night when both managed to secure wins in their final outings.

To date Estonia had managed to secure the one win but with Belgium sitting just above them on the points table they that they were in with a realistic chance of victory.

Playing in cool conditions at Le Coq Arena, the Estonians built a strong game around some solid defense. They finally found themselves in the 30th minute when Konstantin Vassiljev broke through the Belgian defense before looping the ball into the box where Raio Piiroja’s head was waiting to put away the first goal of the night.

It was Vassiljev again in the 67th minute when he was on hand to take a cross from Dmitri Kruglov to score his team’s second.

Down in Lithuania the weather was not much better as Lithuania caused an upset of sorts in defeating Serbia 2-1. With Serbia having already qualified for the World Cup, the game did not have much meaning for them as the Lithuanians who were attempting to finish fourth in the group.

Serbia played rough, which was to the benefit of the Lithuanians who scored both of their goals from penalty shots, the first to Mindaugas Kalonas in the 20th minute and the second to Marius Stankevicious in the 68th minute.

The only positive to come out of an otherwise dismal night for Serbia was a goal to substitute Zoran Tošić in the 59th minute.

With Latvia also capping of their campaign with victory, it was a memorable evening for Baltic football. All three teams will be looking forward to their next campaign which will be qualifying for Euro 2012.
