Lithuanian teams dominating BBL

JELGAVA, Latvia — After another weekend of BBL league action the Lithuanian teams are dominating, filling out four of the top five spots.

The only team that is currently mixing it with the Lithuanians are Kalev/Kramo from Estonia, although they experienced their first loss to date when they beaten convincingly by the visiting Ventspils 82-60 on Sunday. Leading by 7 after the first period, Kalev/Cramo were completely outplayed by the visitors leading up to half-time as Ventspils took the period 24-9 to hold the lead at the half. It was a lead that they would not render as they went on to take the game.

It was not only Ventspils second game of the tournament but their second of the week. Their week did not start to plan as the Latvian champions experienced an upset of sorts, going down by two to Liepājas Lauvas on Tuesday by two (64-62). Lauvas took a two point lead into the final period which they would not relinquish as the two teams went basket for basket in an exciting final quarter.

Liepājas Lauvas were quickly brought back to earth on Friday when Lietuvos Rytas doubled their guests score on the way to handing them a 118-59 drubbing. It is the biggest margin in the league to date but with Lietuvos Rytas playing in the fashion they are, we can expect similar scores to prevail.

Šiauliai were another to enjoy a prosperous week producing victories away to Valmiera on Tuesday and at home to Rock on Saturday.  The Lithuanians were unfazed in both match-ups cruising to 84-77 and 95-60 results respectively.

It was bad week for Rock who also experienced a 74-59 loss away to Nevėžis on Thursday. The poor week leaves last year’s semi-finalists lingering at the bottom of the table.

Žalgiris completed the week by reminding Lietuvos Rytas they are not the only team dominating procedures cruising to an 83-52 victory over Nevėžis to take their early season record to 0-5. Nevėžis were competitive during the opening exchanges but it did not take long for Žalgiris to settle into their rhythm and exert their dominance.

This week will see the teams take a rest from the BBL as they take time to either rest or work on other campaigns. However, things will be back up and running in the last week of October with Rock looking for their first victory next Monday when they host Liepājas Lauvas.
