Pedophile sentences may increase

VILNIUS — The Lithuanian parliament is likely to call a vote next week on whether or not to increase jail time for sexual offenders convicted of assaulting children.

Despite the recent attention given to how the Lithuanian criminal justice system handles pedophilia the Drąsius Kedys manhunt has caused, the bill was not created in reaction to it but was actually drafted in June.

The bill was put forward by Seimas members Valentinas Mazuronis and Alfonsas Dailis Barakauskas, both of the Order and Justice Party. Mazuronis told the newspaper Vilnius Diena that the bill would be introduced Nov. 5.

If passed, it would increase the sentence for the conviction of an act of pedophilia from two years incarceration to six years.
