MINSK, Belarus — Dinamo Riga have been brought back down to earth in Minsk, going down 2-1 in overtime to Dinamo Minsk following their recent win over the competitions top dogs.
Still on a high from defeating top team SKA St. Petersburg on Friday evening at home, they could not replicate their performance against a Dinamo Minsk team who were also on a high after defeating Dinamo Moscow.
It was another tough night for Dinamo Riga as they played six minutes of the first period with just four skaters, compared to Dinamo Minsk’s two minutes. Throughout this period their defense remained staunch but the pressure finally told in the fourteenth minute when Geoff Platt scored for the hosts.
The second period came and went with no change to the score as both teams displayed some solid defense. As the clock began to count down in the final period Dinamo Riga began to play with a little more urgency, creating more offensive opportunities.
However as they began to lift their urgency they also began to lift the aggression with captain Sandis Ozoliņš the first being made to pay, given a ten minute penalty for the second game in a row. Just six minutes later and Robert Petrovicky was joining his captain in the penalty box for the remainder of the game, also for fighting.
On top of the punishment, Dinamo Minsk were given a five minute power play, but for the first time this season Dinamo Riga succeeded in scoring against the power play. With just six minutes of regular time remaining it was Mārtiņš Cipulis who came up with the goods for Dinamo Riga to force the over-time.
Unfortunately for Dinamo Riga it was a short-lived overtime with the hosts sealing the win through Dmitri Maleshko in the second minute.
Dinamo Riga will now return home for an eleven break before traveling to Kazan to play AK Bars.
