RIGA — An apartment fire on Jekadpils Street in the southeastern side of Riga killed seven people shortly before midnight Saturday evening.
Latvia’s State Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman Inga Vetere told the press that police suspect the fire to have originated in the vacant second floor occupied by drug-using squatters.
Four women and three men were killed while two others were hospitalized. Eight adults and four children were rescued.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
