JELGAVA, Latvia — It was a less than memorable week for Lithuanian basketball in the Euroleague as Žalgiris and Lietuvos Rytas each succumbed to losses.
Playing in Greece on Wednesday evening, Lietuvos Rytas were easily accounted for 97-73 by hosts Olympiacos. The game had effectively been decided by half-time with two average quarters of basketball leaving the Lithuanians trailing by 21 at the half.
One positive for Lietuvos Rytas was the support play coming from their bench, which out-scored their starting line-up. The loss sees them sitting in third place in Group B.
Hosting Spanish team Regal FC Barcelona on Thursday evening, Žalgiris fared no better than their countrymen going down 77-70. The hosts did a great job at closing down Spanish sensation Ricky Rubio but the rest of Regal team was able to step up.
Down by three at the half, Žalgiris were made to pay for a sloppy third quarter in which Regal extended their lead to ten. Žalgiris had a better showing in the final quarter but the damage had already been inflicted.
Žalgiris now slip to fourth in group a having managed just the one victory to date.
