JELGAVA, Latvia — With Lithuania’s A-Lyga bowing out for this season, balticreports.com reviews the year that was.
It has been another dominant season for Ekranas, who had just one one bump in the road to almost finishing the season unbeaten. With 58 goals for and just 20, no other team could produce such an impressive offensive or defensive record.
However, all this said, it was not until the last weekend of the competition that Ekranas could be declared champions, for if they were to lose to surprise package Vėtra, then it would have left the two teams in a stalemate at the top of the table.
At the start of the season Vėtra were not given much of a chance and a large part of their success can be attributed to young goalie Povilas Valinčius, who uefa.com recognized as Lithuania’s player of the future. His strong season in goal was awarded with selection in the Lithuania u-21 team.
Rounding out the top three were Sūduva, who won the cup final 1-0 to gain entry to next season’s UEFA Europa League second qualifying round.
