RIGA — Latvian President Valdis Zatlers got a peculiar present for the Nov. 18 independence day when hackers attacked his office’s official website www.president.lv Wednesday morning.
Visitors of the site could read a note left by intruders saying “Greetings on the 91st anniversary, Mr. President, save the country! We might not last until the 92nd anniversary.” At the same time the ordinary parts of the site were not visible.
The hacked version of the website redirected to www.varoni.lv, which is a site for mobile operator’s Tele2 marketing campaign Varoņi (Heroes). Tele2 public relations representative Vita Sirica denied to the local press any possible connection between the company and the unpleasant incident with president’s website.
“Since criminal code articles 241 and 243 stipulate criminal responsibility for such arbitrary actions, the president’s office has contacted law enforcement agencies regarding start of an investigation on this case,” Zatlers’ press secretary Ilze Rassa told the press. The president’s office would not give further comments on the matter in order to keep the celebrating mood on the national holiday.
The website functioned normally later that day. Other state institutions’ websites were not been hacked. Wednesday’s attack is the third registered case when hackers break into state-owned web resource. Two years ago interior ministry’s website was hacked, and before that the target was website of the state police.
Lol now even the Presidents fall prey for the hacker? Great! Time for everyone to know what cyber crime really is and how to secure your own self
