Tallinn Airport may build a private jet area

TALLINN — Tallinn Airport is considering building a hanger complex for smaller aircraft to make it more conducive for private jets.

Tallinn’s city government will decide Wednesday morning whether to initiate private and small jet airport construction on the land behind Tallinn Airport. The airport wishes to connect the lands and obtain a building permit for a hangar for small and private planes in order to divide commercial aviation from general aviation.

“The purpose is to serve the private aviation at a different airport sector, which is also required by European Union,” Einari Bambus, development director of Tallinn Airport, told Baltic Reports. “Today it’s organized under randomly installed shades and some aircraft are even staying under the open sky.”

No architectural blueprints for the hanger have been drawn up yet, and figuring out the financing is a long way off, too.

Bambus said the building design will depend on certain interest groups.

“Once the blueprint will be approved, we can negotiate with possible interest groups about possible constructions and their sizes, we then see if we are able to finance it all on our own, or we have to seek for co-financing from the banks or possible clients,” Bambus said.

According to Mari Heinsalu Tallinn City Planning Office spokesman, once the blueprint will be launched by the city government the borough government will put it on display for two weeks, after which will be a public discussion in which anyone opposed to the plan can voice their concern.
