RIGA — It’s unclear why the Polish tanker “Romanka” ran aground near Pāvilosta, Latvia early Friday morning.

This ship holds 60 tons of fuel but no environmental damage was reported, according to Latvia’s Ministry of Defense. No information as to how the ship ended up stuck roughly 30 m from the beach at 5:30 a.m. has been released.

The ship originated from the Port of Tallinn and was bound for the Port of Riga and does not contain any cargo. Why it was sailing near the Pāvilosta is a mystery, as the small town is located on the western coast of Kurzeme, beyond the normal sea route from Tallinn to Riga.

The Latvian coast guard attempted to pull the ship back to sea using cables and towboats Friday evening, but failed. The ship is currently in the same position as before.

I think Latvia has some tugboats. They could easily pull away this boat.
