The power of garbage

TALLINN — Soon Tallinn residents will no longer have to worry about the garbage they manufacture, as it all will be produced as energy.

The Tallinn municipal government is negotiating with two energy companies to build a garbage-burning factory fueled by refuse to produce it into electricity and heat. Two bids from AS Eesti Energia and AS Tallinna Küte will be presented to the city council Tuesday.

Combined heat and power production of waste is more efficient than its disposal at the garbage dumping grounds, and is part of a European Union directive on waste handling.

When the factory construction will begin and how much it is going to cost remain unknown as negotiations are ongoing and neither the municipal government nor AS Tallinna Küte is willing to comment at this early stage.

Ando Leppiman, head of Eesti Energia Recycled Energy said he is delighted for Tallinn’s appreciation of combined heat and power production and is willing to establish the factory in the city’s vicinity.
