Latvia goes Hollywood!

RIGA — Would you give up the love of your life for millions of dollars?

That’s the choice given to the protagonist of the first Hollywood movie produced by someone from the Baltic states, now set to be released in Estonia and Lithuania after having a strong run in Latvia.

“I Want Your Girl,” the feature-length directorial debut of Latvian television producer Miks Ozoliņš was shot in 10 days on a Hollywood backlot but produced independently. Ozoliņš calls the film a “dramady.”

“It was the first Baltic movie produced in Hollywood,” Ozoliņš told Baltic Reports.

The movie is based on the popular Estonian play “Bungee Jumping” and Ozoliņš said his experience working for MTV in Lithuania influenced the film, making it truly pan-Baltic.

“The main goal was to make a good quality first film and capture the viewers attention only with a few good actors and one location,” Ozoliņš said.

In it a couple, played by talented Canadian character actor Lochlyn Munro and the stunningly beautiful Latvian model and actress Agnese Zeltina, are on a road trip but get stuck by a thunderstorm and come to a house with owned by an eccentric man who offers Munro’s character millions of dollars to leave Zeltina.

In addition to playing the female lead, Zeltina also co-produced the movie.

“Yes, it was a great experience. It was my first movie as producer, instead of just playing the lead,” Zeltina told Baltic Reports. “I had a big job. It was amazing.”

Released Oct. 31, the final day in Latvia’s theaters was Thursday. Initial figures are not available yet, but Ozoliņš said “I think in this economic situation it did quite well, it was in theaters for five weeks.”

The dates for release in Lithuania and Estonia are not confirmed, but Ozoliņš is shooting for early spring. A release in Russia is also on the books.

“The world premiere was in Latvia, because it was important to go back home and see what our people think. I’d like to do the same for Lithuania and Estonia, so they’ll have an opinion,” Ozoliņš said.
