JELGAVA, Latvia — Lietuvos Rytas are the only unbeaten team in the Baltic Basketball League following another weekend’s action.
The weekend saw another three games take place, including the match of the round when the two unbeaten teams Lietuvos Rytas and Žalgiris went head to head. Valmiera were also in action as they looked to please their home crowd whilst Šiauliai were also looking to remain in contention.
The action began in the north of Latvia with Nevėžis heading north to meet their opponents Valmiera. Both teams have had less than memorable seasons to date as they both went into the game searching for just their third win. It was Nevėžis who were looking the better to claim their third win early on finishing the first quarter up by two, 19-17. However, this was the highlight of the night for the Lithuanians with the Latvians taking the remaining three periods with ease to run away with the game 93-58.
Down in Šiauliai visitors VEF Riga were brought back down to earth after some promising results of late. Šiauliai led from the outset and would not relinquish their lead for the remainder of the game, also cruising to victory 95-71. The young Arvydas Šikšnius was particularly prominent for the hosts, leading the scoring with 24.
The match of he round did not live up to its billing with Lietuvos Rytas proving just how far ahead they are of the competition at the moment. Žalgiris are recognised as being one of the top teams in the Baltics, given their participation in Eurocup but in Vilnius on Saturday night they failed to fire a shot, going down 91-74. Admittedly it could have been a different story early on with the guests playing as a complete team, sneaking out to a 25-18 lead , but like their countrymen, Nevėžis their early lead meant little in the overall picture.
