VILNIUS — An organized crime unit of the Lithuanian Police Department arrested a man on Monday after he was found to be holding a large cache of weapons and explosives in his basement.

He had at least three rifles, one with optical sight, two small caliber rifles, a revolver, 1,000 rounds, 250 detonators, 2.4 kilos of TNT, three grenades and 89 primers. The munitions were hidden in various apartments and houses in Kaunas and Jonava.

Lina Nemeikaitė, spokeswoman for the Lithuanian Police Department, told Baltic Reports that the large cache “suprised our experienced criminal officers, as it had a serious threat to the suspect’s family members and the surrounding population.”

The suspect was charged with illegal possession of firearms, ammunition, explosives or explovie materials in large quantities.

Although no motive was given by police, Nemeikaite said that “preventing these criminals acts, serious consequences were avoided and we avoided the fall of the illegal things into the hands of the membersof organized group.”

The Lithuanian Police Department posted a video on YouTube documenting some of the munitions found. The video shows an investigator going through a basement and cataloguing two guns, two rifle sights and dozens of boxes of bullets.
