VILNIUS — A Russian aircraft briefly violated Lithuanian airspace shortly after noon on Thursday near Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave.
According to the Ministry of Defense, the aircraft was a non-military An26 aircraft registered in Russia. It was in Lithuanian airspace for about two minutes over the Šilutė district, and went about two kilometers in.
The air violation “seemed to suggest that somebody was there by mistake,” said Robert Sell, a NATO official. Sell said that the Baltics have a “busy air space” and that these incidents occur “once or twice a month” throughout the world.
A spokesperson for the ministry deferred to a press release for comment. Russian officials also declined to comment.
