Pärnu top cop accused of bribery

PÄRNU, Estonia — A former Pärnu top police official could face a four-year probation for accepting bribes in exchange for giving favorable treatment.

Two people accused of bribing former Pärnu police chief commissioner Gunnar Suur — Olga Aasav, a nightclub owner and Joel Miti, former manager of Hansaliising’s western Estonia division — received a 30,000 krooni (€191) fine each Thursday in the Pärnu County Court for bribing a police official. Meanwhile the verdict in Suur’s case is scheduled to be decided Jan. 16.

According to the prosecution, Suur was able to lease an Audi A4 in Dec. 2004 and an Audi A6 in July 2005 from Miti’s company with favorable interest rates after pulling the strings to save Miti from being charged with a misdemeanor after Miti had a fight in Pärnu’s Mirage nightclub and later in April 2005 when Miti was arrested for public urination, but released soon thereafter on Suur’s orders.

Suur is also accused for receiving a 40,000 krooni loan with zero-percentage for sending his employees as security guides at the Sunset nightclub owned by Aasav.
