JELGAVA, Latvia — Lithuanian powerhouses Lietuvos Rytas and Žalgiris continue to dominate the BBL after another round of action was completed over the weekend.

First up on the cards, VEF Riga ventured to Estonia to take on Tartu Rock. With both teams having recorded just the three wins, each was desperate for a win to remain in the pack.

The home court advantage seemed to pay dividends for Rock with their fans helping them towards a 70-59 victory in a low-scoring affair. VEF kept the game close throughout until Rock pulled ahead in the final quarter.

If any team was able to compete with the top Lithuanian teams, many had suspected it would be Ventspils who are enjoying one of their most successful seasons to date. However, the gap between Lietuvos Rytas and the remainder of the BBL teams was none the more evident than on Saturday evening when the team trounced Ventspils 96-72 victory.

After the highs of reaching Euroleague’s Final 16 earlier in the week, Žalgiris proved that their concentration was not waning as they dealt to fellow Lithuanians Šiauliai 86-77.

A return to the BBL gave Žalgiris some complacency in the first period when Šiauliai pulled out to a 22-13 lead but by halfway through the second period they had settled into their work to reverse the first quarter deficit to be leading 44-34 at half time. It was a lead they would not relinquish as they went on to consolidate their second place in the current BBL standings.

Having had an at best average season to date Liepājas Lauvas finally had something to smile about, upsetting fellow Latvians Valmiera 75-60. It was a victory made all the sweeter by the fact that it came away from home. On the night, the Lauvas were simply too good for Valmiera who performed well below-par.

Just one game will take place over the course of the next week with VEF Riga hosting fellow countrymen Ventspils, who will be licking their wounds after their beating at the weekend.
