MELBOURNE, Australia — Estonian Kaia Kanepi has breezed into the second round whilst Latvian Ernests “The Gull” Gulbis has been bustled out.
After being made to wait on Monday due to rain, Kanepi finally got her chance on Tuesday, making no mistake of disposing of Jung-Yan Chan of Taiwan 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.
Kanepi took a while to warm to her work in the first set but as expected Chan posed her with few problems. Kanepi would have been particularly pleased to have won 42% of the serves she faced. Kanepi will have to be on top of her game if she is to advance further, facing Russian no. 19 seed Nadia Petrova in the second round.
The Gull doesn’t take flight
In the mean time it looks like the Jekyll and Hyde show that is Ernests Gulbis looks set to continue for another season. After pushing Roger Federer hard just over a week ago in Qatar, Gulbis entered the Australian Open full of anticipation of a strong result.
Playing no.30 seed Juan Monaco first up, it was a match that most, including the bookmakers had expected Gulbis to win, with many believing that Monaco’s game would pose few threats for the Latvian.
However, the pundits were to be proved wrong again with Gulbis making an unprecedented 73 unforced errors on the way to a 3-6, 6-7 (5-7), 1-6 beating. He managed to produce more aces (8-3) and more winners (33-19) than his opponent but yet again he was made to pay for questionable, and too often erratic shot making.
