VILNIUS — A man attempted to check in baggage with what appeared to be explosives at Vilnius International Airport Tuesday afternoon. Police discounted any connection to terrorism.
Around 1 p.m. baggage control employees detected explosives in a suitcase via a scanner. The luggage belongs to a young Lithuanian man between 20-30 years of age, police say. The suitcase also contained a face mask and a book titled “Sniper’s Diary.”
The man, whose name has not been released, was bound for Oslo, Norway but was immediately arrested after the suitcase’s contents were detected. A pretrial investigation is started, however police said there was no cause for alarm.
“It was an imitation air cartridge and two things that looked like grenades, explosives. It’s only military rubbish,” Rimas Balčiūnas, Vilnius Airport police officer told the press. “I think that he wasn’t informed about what you can carry on a plane and what you can’t.”
The arrest did not affect airport flight traffic.
