TALLINN — Forensic experts determined Friday that last week’s explosion in a three-story apartment building in Tallinn was caused by a gas leak.

Explosive experts were able to enter the building to investigate Friday, after the building’s damaged structure was stabilized.

The investigation results contradict one witness’ report. A 45-year-old woman that lives in a neighboring apartment told Postimees that she heard someone walking in the attic around 2 a.m. in the morning, shortly before the blast.

However, Maria-Elisa Tuulik, a prosecutor’s office spokeswoman, told Baltic Reports that the police had no criminal suspects in the case and could not confirm the woman’s statement.

The explosion, which took place in the Kopli neighborhood on Tallinn’s north side, injured eight people — three men, three women and two children who were all hospitalized. One person remains in the hospital.
