13 car pile-up chokes Vilnius traffic

VILNIUS — Three large-scale car crashes amid slippery road conditions caused traffic bottlenecks and countless late shows at work this morning in Vilnius.

Given that cars in an accident are required not to be moved until police arrive on-scene to investigate and many of Vilnius’ roads have only one or two lanes, even a two-car crash can cause serious delays, so today’s collisions were especially obtrusive.

The three accidents were part of a series of crashes that started in front of the Vilniaus Vartai tunnel in the center of the city, ultimately sending 13 cars to the repair shop.

At 9 a.m. a Honda sedan driven by a woman suddenly stalled as she attempted to change lanes, hitting another car.

About 20 minutes later, a car that did not see the accident ahead slammed into one of the stopped vehicles, triggering a five-car pileup. Shortly thereafter a similar situation occured, causing six cars to collide.

No injuries were reported, and none of the cars are damaged beyond repair. No charges have been filed by police.
