Solaris given Tallinn culture award

TALLINN — Peeter Rebane, the developer of the Solaris Center where a cinema’s ceiling collapsed in October, received a Tallinn Culture Act 2009 award from city hall Tuesday.

Overlooking the fact that Estonia’s Technical Surveillance Agency chastised the rush to finish the structure that resulted in it not complying with manufacturer’s instructions, the municipality gave Rebane the 25,000 krooni (€1,597) award for developing the Solaris shopping and entertainment complex, noting that the center’s Nokia Concert Hall, Cinamon cinema, art gallery, dance studio and jazz club are a boon for creative types.

Other rewarded acts were Helen Sildna’s festival Tallinn Music Week, 25,000 krooni (€1,597);  the Estonian Museum Union, Kadriorg Park and Tallinn City Museum all received  50,000 krooni (€3,195) for cultural events.

The Tallinn Culture Act awards have been given annually since 2005.
