Čaplikas to stay on as health minister

VILNIUS — It looks like the Council of Ministers won’t face another resignation after all.

Although Speaker of the Seimas Irena Degutienė pressed for his ouster on the grounds of “political responsibility,” it appears that Minister of Health Algis Čaplikas will keep his post as the investigation of his Vice Minster Artūras Skikas, who admitted to accepting a 20,000 litai (€5,790) bribe last week, did not implicate Čaplikas. Both Čaplikas’ party, the Liberal and Center Union, and the prime minister said Čaplikas will stay on. Of course, President Dalia Grybauskaitė could declare no confidence in Čaplikas, but there’s little indication she is preparing to do so.

Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius said from the start that unless the investigation showed that Čaplikas was involved, he should stay as minister and he reiterated this more forcefully at a press conference Monday.

“I see no reason why he should resign. From the information received from law enforcement agencies, I see no reason,” Kubilius said.

Meanwhile the Liberal and Center Union, a partner in Lithuania’s governing coalition, decided at a meeting Monday that Čaplikas should stay. The party stripped Skikas of his party membership in the wake of the scandal.

If Čaplikas had resigned, it would be the second minister to leave in a month. Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas left his position in January after Grybauskaitė declared that she no longer had confidence in him.
