JELGAVA, Latvia — Žalgiris and Valmiera are the latest teams to record wins, following BBL action over the weekend.
Taking on Estonians Kalev/Cramo at home, Valmiera needed the win to remain above their opponents on the points table, and also in touch with the leaders. A win for Kalev/Cramo would see them move into the top four.
Valmiera began the stronger of the two teams, pulling out to ten by the end of the first-quarter (25:15). The second period provided some much tighter basketball as Kalev/Cramo took their hosts almost point for point, but Valmiera began the second-half like they had the first to take the game beyond doubt. In the end the hosts were able to complete a relatively simple win 91-78.
Returning from the disappointment of their loss to CSKA Moscow in Eurocup action on Wednesday, Žalgiris were hoping to find the going a little easier against Nevėžis on Sunday. They also used the game as opportunity to give some of the lesser seen players some time on court, whilst resting some of their key players. At one stage this almost looked as if it may have proved costly, with Nevėžis leading at the break 33-28.
Even at the end of the third-quarter, who would victor was anyone’s guess with Nevėžis continuing to hold staunch, taking a 3-point advantage into the final quarter.
To the relief of the home fans, Žalgiris were finally able to string some consecutive baskets together to first eat away at the lead, before establishing a healthy lead of their own. It had been a brave effort by the men from Nevėžis, but in the end it was in vein, falling 74-80.
