VANCOUVER, Canada — Following the death of 21-year-old athlete, Georgian Nodar Kumaritashvili on Friday, it was decided that the death would not affect Saturday’s schedule. Tragically killed in his final practice run for the men’s singles luge, officials released a  statement that the death was caused by fault of the athlete rather than the track, which has in the past been criticized for being dangerously quick. Athletes participating in the first two runs of the men’s luge wore black arm bands out of respect for their fellow fallen athlete.

Men’s downhill delayed

The men’s downhill, involving two Baltic athletes has been delayed until Tuesday due to poor weather conditions and weak [private_supervisor]visibility. With officials having been worried about the lack of snow leading up to the event, it now seems that they are being inundated with too much.

Minins has appendix removed

Janis Minins, pilot of Latvia 1 in both the four and two man bobsleds, was a notable exception from the athletes parade at the opening ceremony. Instead the Latvian was being operated on to remove a ruptured appendix. With practice runs for the bobsled not commencing until later in the week, it is hoped that he will make a full recovery in time to compete in both of his events. It would be massive blow for Latvian hopes if he were not to recover, with Minins viewed by many as an outside medal chance.
