Kanepi, Gulbis advance

MEMPHIS, U.S. — Estonian Kaia Kanepi and Latvian Ernests “The Gull” Gulbis have both advanced to the second-round of their respective draws at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championship.

Going into the women’s singles tournament as third seed, Kanepi made light work of her Dutch opponent Arantxa Rus 6-0, 6-4. Next up she will take on wild-card Nicole Vaidišová, who also made her way into the second-round with ease. Kanepi should enter the game with caution, given the former glory of Vaidišová. Formerly, a top 10 ranked player, Vaidišová mind seems to have been on things other than her own tennis lately, ironically one of those is [private_supervisor]the second-round opponent of Kanepi’s fellow Balt Ernests Gulbis: Redak Štěpánek. The couple have been dating for over a year now and many speculate he has had a large hand to play in her loss of form.

Meanwhile, over in the men’s singles, for the first time in three tournaments, Gulbis has advanced past the first round. He did so by defeating American qualifier Robert Kendrick 6-4, 6-4. Gulbis was able to overcome the crowd, who were obviously rallying behind their countryman to put in one of his more complete performances in recent tournaments. The win now sets him up with a date with previously mentioned Czech, Štěpánek. Gulbis will have to be on top of his game if he is to upset the tournament third seed and current world no. 14. Again, in what is quickly becoming a cliche, it is a chance for Gulbis to show his serious intentions in regards to fulfilling his potential and pushing into the world top 20.
