RIGA — Advertising revenues in Latvia for media outlets plummeted 46 percent over 2009 compared to the year before, new statistics from TNS Latvia show.

Magazines were hit the hardest with a [private_supervisor] 63 percent decline followed closely by newspapers, which saw a 57 percent loss in revenue.

Internet advertising fared best amongst the poor numbers, only experiencing a 32 percent decrease in advertising spent.

The statistics matriculate what has been an awful year for Latvian media — many journalists have lost their jobs and several media enterprises have changed hands, most notably the respected daily Diena newspaper, which had a staff walkout after new owners didn’t gel with workers.

Despite declining 32 percent over the year, internet advertising gained ground on other media forms, in keeping with world trends. Internet advertising is becoming increasingly popular as opposed to traditional forms of media.

Outdoor advertising is one of the mediums that lost out heavily at 38 percent, although wall-side advertising on houses increased 70 percent.
