Kanepi out, Gulbis continues

MEMPHIS, U.S — Estonian Kaia Kanepi has been ousted at the quarterfinal stage of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championship, whilst Latvia’s Ernests “The Gull” Gulbis has gone one step closer to winning his [private_supervisor] first-ever singles title.

After having a relatively trouble free run up to the quarters, their was nothing to suggest this would not continue when she came up against little heard of Czech opponent Petra Kvitová. She would have been having similar thoughts after talking the first set 6-1. However this was good as it got for Kanepi, with Kvitová rallying back to take the next two sets 6-3, 7-6.

At this stage the Gulbis of old would have rolled over and played dead but on this occasion Gulbis returned to the court with renewed energy, breaking the Czech twice on his way to taking the second set 6-3. This set up a thrilling final set where neither player was allowing their serve to be broken forcing the set to a tie-break. Gulbis proved the more determined, holding on to take the set and match 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3).

Sam Querry has handed Gulbis a lifeline of sorts knocking out top-seed Andy Roddick, meaning he will now meet Gulbis in the semi-final. The lanky American plays a similar game to the Latvian, relying on a powerful serve to overcome opponents. If Gulbis is to win, it will be the firt time that he plays in an ATP tour singles final, a feat which will go a long way to upping his world ranking from its current place of 99.
