MEMPHIS, U.S — Latvia’s Ernests “The Gull” Gulbis has failed in his attempt to make his first-ever ATP singles final.
It had been a fine tournament for Gulbis to date, knocking out two seeded players to set up his semi-final encounter. However, he could not do it a third time with American Sam Querry coming up trumps in the semifinal. Querry was on top of his game, having already dispatched no. 1 seed Andy Roddick in emphatic form, showing why he is rated as one of America’s next big players.
The semifinal was something of a one-sided affair with the eighth seeded Querry cruising to a relatively easy 6-3, 6-4 victory Saturday with Gulbis unable to get a break. Querry then went on to win the final, defeating fellow American and doubles partner John Isner (6-7 (3), 7-6 (5), 6-3).
Gulbis will remain playing in the U.S, this week participating in the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships. His tournament will begin on Tuesday against a yet to be found qualifier. This week the main opponents standing in the way of Gulbis making the final are no.1 seed German Tommy Haas and another German, no. 6 seed Florian Mayer.
