KLAIPĖDA, Lithuania — The Port of Klaipėda saw a 14.1 percent increase in handling for January this year compared to the year before despite the unusually cold weather, which hampered movement in the waterway.
The numbers are a good sign for the port city, which has seen massive falls in trade since the economic crisis began. Klaipėda outperformed both Riga and Ventspils ports, being second after Tallinn on this side of the Baltic sea for overall[private_supervisor]turnover for the month. Data on the two Russian ports in St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad is unavailable for comparison.
Klaipėda’s turnover of dry and bulk cargo increased by 52.7 percent and general cargo increased 21.7 percent. Liquid cargo decreased by 13.8 percent however. Passenger flow also increased by 17.2 percent.
Natural chemical fertilizers constituted a large part of the increase in bulk cargo trade. Much of Klaipėda’s intake is shipped to Belarus.
Though Klaipėda traded more than Liepāja, the Latvian port saw a much larger increase in trade — 24.5 percent. Tallinn port also had a bumper month and saw a 25.4 percent increase in trade.
Both Ventspils and Riga saw decreases in trade during the month with 20 and 15.6 percent decreases in turnover.
The Klaipėda port authority plans to dredge a deeper canal and add extra terminals to increase the possibilities for more trade with larger ships, both passenger and cargo.[/private_supervisor] [private_subscription 1 month]turnover for the month.
