VILNIUS — Reflecting the severe economic downturn the country endured last year, Lithuania’s advertising market shrank 39.2 percent according to a TNS Gallup study.

After rising steadily during the “Baltic Tiger” boom, with a total increase of 9.1 percent in 2008, the drop brought the total amount of money spent on advertising in Lithuania to 329 million litai (€95 million). Print magazines and newspapers were the hardest hit, with 48.6 percent and 46.7 percent decline in [private_supervisor]advertising sales respectively.

Lithuania’s advertising decline is comparable to the other Baltic states, each among the hardest hit by the economic crisis in the world. Overall advertising in Latvia fell 46 percent according to TNS Latvia, while Estonia’s fell 40 percent.

TNS Gallup is predicting an overall decline of 14 percent in advertising in 2010 as domestic demand remains weak despite the economy’s stabilizing.
