Ēķis’ assets frozen

RIGA — Less than a week after Andrejs Ēķis bought out News Corporation’s shares of Latvian television networks LNT and TV5, the Riga Regional Court froze the assets of his company Neatkarigie Nacionalie Mediji.

The seizure is part of an ongoing investigation into the mishandling of the digitalization of Latvian television, which began in 2003. Authorities suspect Ēķis, People’s Party leader and [private_supervisor]former Prime Minister Andris Šķēle and others of running the secretive Kempmayer Media Ltd, an off-shore company that won a €38 million contract to implement the digitalization of Latvia’s state-run media. Ēķis has denied any involvement with Kempmayer, while Šķēle called the accusations “fantasy.”

Ēķis said the seizure of his assets is a violation of his human rights and said he may petition the European Court of Human Rights.

“I think I’ll go to the European Court of Human Rights, will make submissions on this issue. In the Latvian court system, this decision cannot be appealed. My rights are infringed in this case,” Ēķis told the newspaper Diena Bizness Wednesday.

Ēķis said his continued prosecution is being orchestrated by Šķēle, as until Wednesday a People’s Party member was justice minister.
